When a world record can be described as “not too bad,” you know you're dealing with an extraordinary individual. Michael Phelps has set his aim so high that anything short of eight golds at these Games may feel to him like failure.
You would think fatigue would be a factor by now; that the accumulated wear of 10 races (including preliminaries) would have eroded Phelps' physical edge. But less than an hour after his earlier race, and only a few minutes after the medals ceremony, Phelps' 200 freestyle leg was less than half a second short of the time he posted in winning the solo event the day before.
