Public transport is pretty basic, the road network is poor and hotel capacity is inadequate. With an unemployment rate of up to 40 percent, crime in particular violent crime is very high.
NVDL: Eskom's problems (both in terms of curtailing growth, and by cutting off power to electricified perimeter security) bode pretty badly for South Africa. Expensive energy and food prices (the inflationary effect) are now about to impact adversely on already high unemployment figures. South Africa has demonstrated that it can't cut down on electricity demand, and in fact, need even more capacity. The country faces major challenges, while the locals seem to feel - as they always do - there's no big deal, and it's all under control.
