Somebody save me - lost and alone and afraid in a lovely, sunny (but crummy and mixed up) loft

I moved to Johannesburg about 12 months ago and although I stay in an awesome sunny loft apartment in X area it's frustrating that it still feels so unfinished. I have friends in Houghton and haven't invited them to dinner yet - because, well... Where to begin? When you come in there is the grottiest dishwater gray and frankly filthy carpet you have ever seen. My landlady kindly gave me a sofa. We had to hoist the mother up onto the balcony and carry it through that entrance (the door won't lock) as the stairway is too narrow - but the sofa needs to be hidden under a blanket, because it looks like they cut away a section of the aforementioned carpet to upholster it.

I took over the futon from the previous tenant - a film producer - and inherited a back problem. I don't know why, but I end up waking up more tired than before I go to bed to bed, and the mattress is hard but not that hard. Still, the couch actually sleeps a lot better. And what to do about the windows? Blinds, curtains, or leave them open and let the early morning light wake me up?

I don't know what to do about the walls. One is like a nail-varnish pink, another is beachsand brown. The place is tiled, so kind've cold, and I've thrown a couple of mismatched carpets to warm the floor. It doesn't gel, that much is obvious. I don't know whether to go earthy (the window sills are lovely wooden frames, so is the kitchenette), or lively red, or a more cold integrated white modern feel. I'd like to be able to use some of the space to show-off my photography, and just be able to entertain occasionally with confidence.

And my computer console is just a knee knocking, neck jerking joke. I also need at least one other cheap chair for balcony braai's (as I say the loft itself is stunning), and I dunno - it has soooo much potential but I can't think what route is the way to go. Somebody save me!!!!

NVDL: This was my pitch ad to the Homechannel. Got a response today. They're coming to take a look!
