In 2003 and 2004 I trained very hard for the Korea Ironman. This included flying to the island of Jeju, and booking hotel accomodation, entering (at a cost of a few grand) - add it all up and it's a multiple of 10 grand. On both those occasions I was unable to compete (I withdrew at 100km on the bike in 2003). In 2004 I had no bleeding ear or flu to blame; I just felt completely run down. It's incredibly disappointing, as it is hard to rationalise or justify the sacrifices not only of money, but time and effort and also passing up a lot of other opportunities.
What one does gain is an even deeper appreciation of success, when everything does finally fall into place. I think Ryk should give 2012 a go, but learn the lesson of his shoulder. I think, if anything, he pushed too hard.

It’s hard to put into words how I feel at this time. For the past three years I gave everything. I sacrificed a lot to get to this point and to perform at the best of my abilities, but that was not good enough today and I didn’t advance to the semi finals. |
