9 Olympic Career Golds: Phelps Walks on Water

"He probably just has to show up to make history. Or at most dive in." - Dan Wetzel
"He reminds me of me." - Mark Spitz

“To be tied for the most Olympic golds of all time, with those names, in Olympic history …,” Phelps said, before pausing and letting out a slight chuckle.

“The Olympics have been around for so many years, that’s a pretty amazing accomplishment.”

The mark isn’t likely to be shared for long. Phelps will go for his fourth and fifth golds of these games, which would push him to 11 overall, when he competes Wednesday in the finals of the 200 butterfly and 800 free relay, two more events in which he already holds world records. - Dan Wetzel

Phelps broke the world record in the men's 200 metres freestyle with a time of one minute 42.96 seconds at the Beijing Olympics. Phelps went under his previous world record of 1:43.86 set at the world championships in Melbourne in M

Phelps, of course, did his part faster than any human ever (1 minute, 42.96 seconds) and cruised easily to his third gold medal with five more to be hung on his neck soon enough.

If Phelps had to do more than eat pizza, wake up, show up and take off his iPod to win the race, then it wasn’t much. Consider the diving start.

“My dive was perfect,” he said.

So perfect he led by half a body length soon after emerging from the water. Not long after that, he had a full-body lead.
