The man blamed for Zimbabwe's slide into ruin is now at the ripe age of 84 - but his countrymen can no longer hope to live for half that long.
A crash in life expectancy - once more than 60 years - is just one of the features of his 28-year rule, along with fear, violence, corruption, cronyism and the hyper-inflation that has crippled the economy.
The current chaos is in stark contrast to the early days of Robert Gabriel Mugabe, the son of a village carpenter born in Zvimba, 40 miles west of Zimbabwe's capital, Harare.
