HARARE - President Robert Mugabe's ruling party is refusing to release the results from Zimbabwe's presidential election and is now demanding a recount, prompting outrage across the country as fears mount of a dirty war and a prolonged campaign of intimidation. |

By law, the results had to be released by the end of Friday. The opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) has now launched a court bid to have the outcome of the presidential poll announced immediately. Zimbabweans and analysts say that the government's refusal to release the results show that not only did Mugabe lose, but that he likely lost by a handy margin. Meanwhile, militant supporters of the ruling party invaded eight of the few remaining white-owned commercial farms yesterday, driving at least four cattle ranchers off their land and seizing equipment and livestock, the farmers reported - another sign Mugabe plans to use violence to stay in power. |
