Despite explosion at Eskom World Cup still on

SHOOT: South Africa's state-owned energy utility has reported an explosion at the sulphur dioxide plant of their Lethabo plant. Apparently there is no reason to fear that during World Cup games - during the height of South Africa's winter and thus electricity demand - electricity to the city of Johannesburg might have to be diverted to keep the World Cup stadiums lit. No comment on the possibility of further explosions.

"I can confirm that there was an incident and that a contractor was killed," spokesperson Andrew Etzinger said. Twenty-five people were injured and nine were hospitalised, but have since been discharged, he said. Power supply to the national grid would not be affected, since the generator where the incident happened was on maintenance, Etzinger said. "All our power stations are connected to the national grid, but this will have no impact on the supply of electricity."
