Grubstreet checks out SA media's assessment of Bafana's...er...performance

SHOOT: The media are kinda funny aren't they. It's bad news all around, and when it's about selling papers and tickets well then a lacklustre performance suddenly gets some bottled up positive spin. I noticed something amazing on Friday the 12th, 2009. Not a single poster had anything to say about WHO ANNOUNCES GLOBAL SWINE FLU PANDEMIC. It shows you how discerning our press is. A local soccer tournament is far more important than a global fly pandemic (even if the local team isn't up to scratch).
Here was my assessment of the game: http://www.nickvanderleek.com/2009/06/bafana-bafana-kick-themselves-in-foot.html

The Sowetan, like many other dailies, chose to splash on the event, the opening ceremony and the symbolism of big soccer landing on our shores.  But they couldn’t resist this headline either You blew it! – Bafana shoot blanks against Iraq
The Star played a similar tune with its "Bafana miss, but SA scores" headline. Hmm, bit of a cop-out, guys. Why not simply say that "Bafana miss, but soccer scores"? Isn’t that what the pundits always say when their team plays crap?

IOL is the one of the few mainstream news sites throwing the story ahead this morning with a post-match piece headlined We played well, says Santana
Of course you did. You just didn’t score any goals or win… against Iraq. Coach Santana may come to regret his invitation to fans to judge his performance at the Confed Cup.
