NVDL: I think the reasons for the high levels of intolerance in this country is due largely to the high levels of religiosity and a culture of inflexible intolerance.
It placed SA alongside countries such as the Philippines and Chile, where intolerance towards gays and lesbians is more than five times higher than in the Netherlands, double that of Great Britain and a third higher than in the US .
SA’s Bill of Rights expressly prohibits discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation and the country has far-reaching judgments regarding medical aid parity, custody of children, immigration, inheritance and insurance, but the study derived from the South African Social Attitudes Survey shows that there is a large gap between the attitude of the average South African and the country’s legislative and legal position.
The level of intolerance among the general population has remained pretty consistent over the past five years, ranging between 82% and 85%.
It also found that black citizens were more likely to disapprove than white or coloured South Africans, and results among the Indian population tended to fluctuate.

I think the reasons for the high levels of intolerance are because South Africa is still a very young democracy. I mean it's taken the US how long to get a black president?
We have a long legacy of apartheid, not just between black and white but between men and women. The society under the previous government was characterised by white dad working, white mom staying at home looking after kids and people of other colours being poor. An incredibly strange phenomenon occurs when people are emancipated! They tend to forget their own "enslavement", abuse their new-found power and "enslave" others who do not conform to their way of thinking!
Something else to blame on apartheid? Yawn.....
maybe... but
I tend to agree with Nick - religion definately plays a huge part in the intolerance.
