So I was sitting on the grass at the 46664 concert when who should saunter by, stepping right by our red picnic blanket, but Ryk himself? I thought he was in America? I second-gussed the impulse to reach out for his calf...a bunch of mixed feelings induced hesitation.
Conincidentally we were joined by some friends a few minutes later; one of whom said she'd been on a date with Ryk the previous evening. I told her she'd just missed him and why not just call him now and join him at the concert. She said something to the effect of: "He never carries his phone with him." K told me that Ryk was back in South Africa due to an injury but couldn't tell me what the injury was. She said they'd met on Facebook, and that he often hangs out at Taboo.
But I had a question buzzing around in my brain: do celebrities mix with non-celebrities? And if they do, should they? There are, I suppose, a few examples: Nicolas Cage marrying an Asian waittress. Can they afford to be seen with non-celebrities, especially in public? The likes of Tom Cruise would have a heart attack at the notion.
See, my concern was really that if I stopped Ryk and chatted about the good old swimming days with Simon Gray, and did he see the photographs I took of JM, it might draw an unwanted mob (seeing as they we were already in a crowd situation). Or maybe it wouldn't; I wouldn't really know. But probably, Ryk would.
A few minutes later Ryk wafted back, carrying a few beers. I had a much better sense of peace about not approaching him. I realised there was probably a good chance that he'd seen me and decided not to approach me. Which is also fair enough.
