SA’s cyclists in Bloemfontein this weekend

As I was about to step into our offices today, I noticed a car on Nelson Mandela drive hauling a bunch of shiny Cervelo bicycle frames. It’s that time of year again, when the best cyclists in the country go head to head first in Time Trial tussles, and then two days later, over several up and down laps in the Road Championships.

The field this year is the biggest in years. But SA’s this year takes place against a background of controversy too. 2007 is also the first year that CSA plans to make their licenses compulsory for all fun rides. This means that riders who turn up for races now have to join a club first, pay their fees there, and then make applications through these organs for a CSA license. Many cyclists are unhappy with this level of control.
