Is Love Cool?

Isn't Tom Cruise (voted as the best or biggest movie star in history, or something, in Premiere) the epitomy of cool? So is the cool way to be in love to be 'not cool'?

I happened to catch an interview with Tom Cruise on Oprah (yes, I admit it), and my eyes nearly popped out of my head. I thought he was on drugs. Guffawing, jumping on the coach, many MANY huge fist in palm gestures - he was very 'uncool'. Oprah kept saying "He's gone." She seemed even to have difficulty interviewing him, and I was privately thinking, 'I think this guy has a problem...'

Later in the show they got down to business to talk about the upcoming movie War of the Worlds.

NEW YORK (AP) -- First Tom Cruise was head over heels about his new girlfriend, Katie Holmes. Then he was giddy. Now, he's just plain batty.

"I can't be cool. I can't be laid-back," an exuberant Cruise said Monday during a taped appearance on "The Oprah Winfrey Show." "Something happened and I want to celebrate it."

A starry-eyed Cruise got down on his knees and repeatedly jumped up on the couch like a Robin Williams comedy act, saying that his love for Holmes was "beyond cool."

Will he propose? His answer did more than leave the door open.

"I'm going to discuss it with her," the twice-divorced actor said. "Honestly, I haven't (had this kind of experience before)."

Later in the show, Cruise went backstage to bring out Holmes, who was quoted in Seventeen magazine last fall as saying she grew up wanting to marry the "Risky Business" star.

"I'm glad I was a big dreamer," she told Winfrey.

The 42-year-old actor and Holmes, 26, were first photographed together in Rome last month. Their relationship, which was earlier announced by their publicists, has caught the celebrity gossip world by storm.

Cruise, who will star in Steven Spielberg's "War of the Worlds" next month, filled in some details about how they met.

"I admire her and I thought I wanted to meet her -- so I called her," he said. He also mentioned memorable events in their romance, including a motorcycle ride on the beach and surprising Holmes in Rome by covering her hotel room in rose petals.

"I'm a romantic. I love that stuff," he said.

Despite their openness, many have expressed doubts about the couple's real intentions. People and Us Weekly magazines have both published polls showing that over 60 percent of respondents believe the relationship is a publicity stunt.

Holmes, who starred on television's "Dawson's Creek," has an upcoming blockbuster of her own, "Batman Begins."

Cruise was previously married to Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman, and dated Penelope Cruz for several years.

Holmes and actor Chris Klein recently called off their engagement, after dating for five years.
