Stage 17 in the Tour de France is THE BIG ONE - and guess who won it last time round?

SHOOT: There are three deciding stages left in the Tour that could slay dragons. There's this one, tomorrow's Time Trial and Saturday's punch to the gullet, the punishing finish up the killer climb of Ventoux. Stage 17 is hard because it is wedged between yesterday's tough stage and tomorrow's time trial. Lance Armstrong won this stage in 2004.

- Today is the stage "de tous les dangers" as the French say.  Unpredictable, a lot can happen.  Former D.S. Cyril Guimard was quoted in today's L'Equipe as saying that yesterday the Schlecks worked simply to eliminate some competition for the podium.  Today?  "Their target should be Contador."  Should be interesting.  Unfortunately, they'll have to do without Jens Voigt after his hard crash yesterday. -Pete
