29 Swine Flu cases in South Africa - 11 new cases

SHOOT: Interesting that these infections all relate to a sports event. I wonder how many infections were spread via the Durban July gathering over the weekend.

I wrote, only yesterday for my Monday column THE VIEW FROM MY BICYCLE that I consider the notion of next year's big international events like Wimbledon, and the Tour de France, and of course 2010 Soccer World Cup, very very fanciful. Sure, you can have these events and tournaments. But in empty stadiums.

Eleven new cases of swine flu have been confirmed in South Africa, bringing the total number of cases in the country to 29, the health ministry said on Monday.

"The 11 cases, all university students, presented with flu-like symptoms at various medical centres and confirmed positive by the National Institute of Communicable Diseases," spokesperson Fidel Hadebe said in a statement.

They were all suffering mild symptoms, he said.

The students were squash players from different parts of the country who stayed in the same university residence for a sports event in Gauteng.

"The participants that attended the games came from different parts of the country and the likelihood of more cases from different provinces is expected." - Sapa
