SA is quota-obsessed
by Peter Macadam, North Shore City, New Zealand (letter addressed to and published in Financial Mail magazine)
Gerald Majola, CEO of Cricket SA, must be living in cuckooland if he believes cricketers and sports people in general buy into the quota-obsessed transformation policies of the ANC.
SA is the only country in the world that selects players on ethnicity for national teams. Under normal circumstances, these quota players wouldn't be selected because they're simply not good enough to represent their country.
It seems as if the country will continue its racist legacy of apartheid via the new buzzword of transformation, warmly embraced by those who now achieve greatness due to their ethnicity, not through merit. This quota madness has permeated every facet of the country and its institutions. It is social engineering aimed at unfair advantage for a select few, based on their race.
I'm sure South Africans by and large don't care who represents them at national level, as long as they are the best of the best, not quotas. Why must everything be demographically representative to be acceptable in SA?
Shame on you Majola and all your ANC mates who try to put a positive spin on transformation. It's an unworkable policy that perpetuates the failed policy of apartheid. Second-best never works in the real world, but it seems as if mediocrity rules supreme in the virtual world of Majola and others who embrace the new apartheid called transformation.
NVDL: I think what is happening is white South Africans have lost their common sense. Some black officials (in sports) keep playing the race card, and so whites overcompensate going: "Sorry, what can we do to help." "Well, just step aside and let us take over." As Macadam says, only in South Africa do we allow second best.
The problem lies both with the chancers, and those too dim-witted to realise that given in to this sort of manipulation is neither natural nor right.

De Villiers is new Bok coach
Cape Town - Peter de Villiers has been named the first black coach of the Springboks, succeeding Jake White at the helm of the Rugby World Cup champions.
De Villiers, currently the coach of the Springboks' Under-21 side, was "a strong leader, a coach with proven track record," the South African Rugby Union (Saru) chief executive Johan Prinsloo told a press conference.
"Peter has created history today by becoming the first black person to coach the Springboks."
His appointment is a surprise with most commentators predicting that the job would go to Heyneke Meyer, a former coach of the Pretoria-based Bulls Super 14 franchise.
Former South Africa assistant coach Allister Coetzee and former Super 12 Cats coach Chester Williams were also on the four-man shortlist.
Asked why the board had eventually opted for De Villiers over Meyer, the president of Saru, Oregan Hoskins, acknowledged that the desire to broaden the racial base of rugby was a factor.
"I want to be honest with South Africa and say the appointment did not take into account only rugby reasons... We took into account the issue of transformation in rugby very, very seriously when we took the decision," Hoskins told reporters.
Saru has been heavily criticised by the South African government over the racial make-up of the Springboks.
Thirteen of the 15 players in the starting line-up in the Springboks' recent World Cup triumph over England were white in a country where around 85% of the population are black or coloured.
De Villiers, who has been given an initial two-year contract, told reporters that colour would be irrelevant when it came to selection.
"The fact that I am the first black coach must end now," he said.
"Players out there must understand they will all stand an equal chance... If they are good enough, talented enough and work hard enough they will be part of the squad."
White departed from the post at the turn of the year, angry that Saru wanted him to reapply for his position even though he had steered the Springboks to World Cup glory in France in October.

NVDL: The future bodes ill for SA Rugby and Reconciliation. I read this and feel angry. Do most of South Africa's black people really even care about rugby, because all this 'transformation' is being done in their name? Worse still, will the Boks ever be the Boks again? Will they ever be capable of giving the All Blacks or the Wallabies a real go?

No More Mr Yeye
South Africa caught a glimpse of what has been going on behind the scenes in the Bok camp...Jake White was almost out the door, when Yeye - jumping the gun - started pushing his weight around. You get a sense that he excels in telling others - tactlessly - what they should do. He gets a kick out of elevating himself above the team, rather than being part of something special. Obviously he isn't.
And he should know better - he doesn't have much weight to push around, whether he is backed by a Presidential choir singing 'Transformation' or 'Silent Night', or not. The bottom line is, either you support the sport called rugby, or you're there for other reasons:
- to stroke your own ego
- to solve the issues of the past by spiting those around you
- to enrich and reward yourself
- to seek attention
- other selfish motives
Pick one Mr Yeye, pin it to your shirt, and then please leave. No, not through the same door Mr White exitted through. The back door. And please leave quietly.

RUGBY: Stofile Regains Sanity on Quotas
Mr. Stofile has calmed nerves by assuring the SA public - who were threatening to mutiny - that transformation will not be a clean sweep at Bok level, but be implemented (sensibly) at school level.
"Quotas are out," Stofile told a parliamentary sports committee. "Let us put our resources into the development of talent."
A R200 million investment is apparently on the cards in order to bring about this transformation process. This represent quite a turnaround from his previous position (see the links below). Sigh with relif, for sanity has (somehow) prevailed.
Stofile unhappy with Springbok squad
Stofile rules out race quotas for national sport teams
Meanwhile the SA Award sponsored by ABSA for the Player of the Year is tonight in the ABSA convention centre. Who else could win it but Bryan Habana? Percy perhaps. Jake White, speaking at Standard Bank on Friday said Percy was the most professional of the Boks. Training hard, always practicing his kicks, and very focussed and quiet on the bus, listening to musics.
Remember Jake White personally went to fetch Monty who had ditched SA then for England (or had SA ditched him), and that investment and trust paid dividends.
White says despite the golden locks and shiny boots, Monty is actually a very humble, hard working guy.
