SA Cycling ‘too white’

While there is transformation in almost every other sport, it is notably absent in cycling

At the South African Cycling Championships held in Bloemfontein earlier this month, it was obvious that cycling has advanced a great deal over the past few years. Many riders are now producing performances that match international standards. One vital aspect of this sport that has broken away, to judge from the all white competitors, is that Cycling South Africa seems to have forgotten to address transformation.

While mainstream sports like Springbok rugby and the Proteas have gone to great lengths to accommodate more representative teams, and even other sports like hockey are adjusting to these imperatives, cycling has until now been completely overlooked.

It’s important to bear in mind that during the Olympics of 2000, even though the men’s hockey side qualified, they were not allowed to participate because the team lacked appropriate representation. In the same way, the cycling team for Beijing has not been selected, and one fears that if transformation isn’t implemented in some drastic fashion very soon, there will be no cycling team headed for the Olympics. This would naturally be a sad day both for the cyclists involved, and the South Africans supporting them.

The goal is to have teams (whether swimming, playing hockey or cycling) that are based on at least a 50/50 representation. South African cycling has a tough road ahead to meet these goals, as it appears, just from a cursory inspection of the hundreds of riders at the 2007 South African Championships, there was a mere handful of black riders. This proportion will have to increase something like 10 fold within the following few months.

Khaya Majeke*, manager of the South African Sport Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) is very serious about this; he has suggested that if sports show a lack of transformation, people should be found “on the streets, or in Alexandra. SASCOC,” Majeke said, “will insure demographic representation [in sports].”

The present Olympic team comprises 45 white and 28 black athletes. However SASCOC was irritated by the comparison made between the South African and Australian Olympic teams of 2004. South Africa managed just 9 medals in 2004 (with a budget of R60 million), while Australia harvested 49 medals (with a budget of R120 million). SASCOC said it preferred to make comparisons against other African countries.

Majeke has made it clear that the first step to dictate team composition will be based in setting criteria and authorizing an agreement to this effect by the Presidents of respective Sport Federations, and pending their approval. Mr Cedric Frolick, an ANC MP has demanded that those sports that do not conform to these prescriptions be identified.

That was me Sunblock and in retrospect I can only apologise. At the time I didn't know that this place was a schoolyard populated by all the ADD and povo kids.

They're like a pack of dogs without individual opinions. When one of them attacks you, the logic and reason of the others seems to go flying out the window and they all join in. The latest example of this is your offer to supply pics of the SA Champs. How that was ever turned into a personal attack on you I am sure I will never be able to work out.

Sunblock: your last post was moved to the Recycle Bin. No personal attacks on forum members are tolerated [unless they're personal attacks on you]. If you have any issue with anyone, this is not the forum to openly discuss it.

www.reporter.co.za

Thanks to the efforts of many charming gentlemen on The Hub, my article (another one went in today on Lewis Pugh's Arctic attempt) on reporter.co.za got so many hits, it made the weeks top three. Thanks for the extra moolah guys.

Most popular articles this week

1.Taxi drivers are terrorists Time to take action against the men who do exactly as they please

2. Why men find bisexual women so attractive The female allure simply blows the male mind

3. A Forum of Fools If a million people believe a foolish thing, it is still a foolish thing – Anatole France

It's quite ironic that through The Hub's Finest's efforts to discredit, they've actually raised the issue even more - since these top 3 articles are emailed to all subscribers, and often advertised as PULL articles in the Sunday Times. It's a nice little deposit into the piggy bank too: I'll have some extra movie-ticket + coke and popcorn money at the end of the month, all thanks to the Hub Bub. Thanks guys, really couldn't have done it without you.

Seeing as though it was so popular, I regret that I didn't spend more time on this article. I probably wrote it in 20 minutes, and it doesn't flow as well as I would like. But it makes its intended point, and what's also good to see is whatever remarks the hubbers came with (because they obviously intended to respond...:

So now that we have been fingered. What are the comments?)

...Reporter staff didn't post any comments because the comments sent were probably too moronic.

An avatar called Jason said this:

Chaps: Yeah Sunblock may have caused a bit of k@k in the last few days but some of things he says in his posts on the reporter.co.za and even on his blog or where ever are true.

See the Hub published links to the two reporter articles (the other one was: SA Champions in Bloem) thanks to Carinus Lemmer, under the thread: Where is Sunblock? Subsequently I was quickly unbanned, and after posting some truth-be-told unflattering comments, was quickly banned again. The moderator insisted I was never banned to start off with (what does this message mean if that is the case?)

Sunblock,
Your account was never blocked...[but]...your username have (sic) now been suspended from this site.

Karel probably figured if I was banned and writing 'I wouldn't visit the Hub again' I couldn't make him look bad, so once I wasn't around I could be unbanned and then he wouldn't look like such a control freak/bozo. Obviously coming back as another avatar made KAKA of his best plaid plan, and made his actions look severely biased (which, after all, they were).

The following 2 posts were deleted as well, amongst others, although the question 'why?' comes up once more. Deleting what a third party has written is an example of what I referred to a few days ago: reconfiguring reality. The internet and digital technology allows us to do that, even makeovers, new haircuts, avatars etc. allow us to be disconnected from what happened before. That's a scary modern trend.

The two comments below were deleted, and there were others besides.

btw that picture posted by Sunblock (aka I) represents a first place at the Tongyoung triathlon in South Korea. But it wasn't for an ITU race, just a local race on the same course the next day. I'm flattered though that you checked to make sure tho. Handy R1500 winner's cheque.

anyone looking for me? I must say Cruxpearl, you set a shocking example for a moderator. You at the very least ought to hold your tongue, lay off the slander, insults and foul language. Skaam jou.

Over the weekend I'm going to do a more thorough study of this: Manners and the Internet, for an international website.

Email from D

By the way - I am horrified to read about the vitriolic attack on you by the cycling fraternity. Are they afraid of being challenged by someone who is not afraid to speak up? Sounds like the response of someone who has his back against the wall and therefore uses the tactic that attack is the best form of defence which in my book translates as coward.
Dont be goaded into saying something they can use against you- sound like a mean bunch but I am glad u r standing your man and not letting them walk over u.

The Hub Bub

Found some posts mysteriously deleted off The Hub after I left work. Was a pity since Carinus Lemmer (head honcho at CSA) responded to a comment I left, inviting discussion, but before I could respond (as Draco Malvoy) I was blocked again.

Carinus, could you please explain the following:
[Quoting Carinus]: 1.

This seems to suggest that late entires are acceptable providing you have approached certain individuals beforehand. That seems fair, obviously, and flexible.
But how is this any different to the Sunblock saga, where van der Leek was refused participation on the grounds that it was late, never mind those in his club and others whom he said he approached beforehand?

Quote: Let the sunshine in.

Carinus (latrinus emmer) responded with:

I attempted to arrange for a meeting between myself and Mr van der Leek, just over 10 days ago.He seemed to indicate a lack in willingness/interest.I can not tell you anything about Mr van der Leek's situation, as I have not been privy to his dealings with CSA, his province or his club(s).By this posting, I again invite him to make contact, so we may meet and hash things into shape.

Thanks,

Carinus

But the moderator (CruxPearl) did this:

Nice try Nick!!!
Please don't think all people stupid because you're an asshole

Carinus ja, you did email me and I emailed you back. But I wasn't convinced that it wasn't just going to be an uitkak parade. You may recall in my email I said:
I don't have a club or license so what would be the point?

Since SA's has passed I would still like to address those individuals at my ex club who have maintained a dodgy silence throughout.

Please email me at
bobthornton.thornton20@gmail.com and perhaps hopefully we can achieve more constructive results than on this domain.

Also got a call last night from Karel and sms to 'stay away or else.' Think the deletions were to cover-up and clean-up some messy moderating that was exposed by my article sent to reporter.co.za. Am going to spend a bit more time on an article to Ohmynews, and see what the Koreans think of this level of forum piracy/sabotage/bias etc.
