Skilled professionals are deserting in droves
Ever wonder why Eskom, our education system and so much else is going to the dogs? Well, there are so few experts in those positions now to do the job, and droves of people only too happy to replace those gas - being placed in 'token' positions - where they can collect their paychecks. Those who leave the country don't care - they're sniffing greener pastures. And those collecting paychecks don't care, they're home and dry, and if the streets fill with potholes or the power goes out, it's not their problem: at least they're driving a beefier car and eating at Nando's more often than they were - isn't that what matters at the end of the day?
I have heard more from the senior side of the population about moving to Mauritius. Australia is always popular. My sister is going to the UK in a few weeks. My cousin and many friends live in places as diverse as Canada , Dubai and Taiwan.
Personally I find it draining to endlessly have to figure out why things aren't working, or to figure out what is happening in contradistinction to what we are told is happening. I'm talking about not even being given honest information about why the lights aren't on every day, or why we are driving in streets filled with craters, or why we now need to drink bottled water.
It seems to me a tremendous waste of time to have to live this way. In other countries people are busy doing their jobs. They do what they do. And then they do what they want to do; they go on holiday etc. Here we are endlessly accusing, blaming, lying, deceiving, covering up, fingerpointing, throwing around racist accusations or having to defend oneself against constant suspicion, pretending, hoping, wishing, waiting - doing everything it seems except one simple thing: the thing we are supposed to be doing. It's not fun. It ruins one's enjoyment of everything, including sport. The President does this, so does the Police Commisioner and the beggar selling flowers at your window. He pretends to sell you a bouquet for R5, you give him R10, he gives you one single flower and won't give you change. This trickery on a grand scale is treachery, this corruption on a grand scale is simply the erosion of a state...everyone loses except the Mugabe's and Mugabe's cousins. All those voices and all the suffering in the name of one struggle is sacrificed in favor of a few greedy people no better than the original oppressor, except worse since they hijacked their own cause and sabotaged their own people. This being the case how can we expect a result different from the one we are seeing.
Undoubtedly we are slipping. Foolishly we continue to suspend disbelief, hoping that things will come around and improve. If we don't get involved, if the buck doesn't stop with us, it's not going to stop with someone else. More and more people are jumping ship in order to not participate in this energy sapping no-result debate. If the buck doesn't stop here, maybe it can stop by going to another country. More and more intelligent people are making this decision, leaving the country to people are appear more and more foolish, and incapable of learning from the obvious mistakes being made.
A successful friend says: "Let's be positive and see what the opportunities are." That's becoming an increasingly slippery slope to gain purchase. I know the house he lives in was vacated becaue the previous occupants were attacked. Time will tell.
