Need an abortion? Set sail!

The abortion ship's doctor

Dutch doctor Rebecca Gomperts has caused huge controversy by providing abortions for women in countries where the procedure is illegal - by treating them on a ship anchored in international waters. Julie Ferry meets her.

"Wherever we go there is a lot of press attention and opposition from anti-abortion groups but it is in developing countries that women really suffer because of unsafe and illegal abortions. That is why it is important for us to go there and raise awareness, however difficult it may be."

NVDL: As always, a difficult issue. But for those people who stand in judgement - who have lived apparently perfect lives - there are people who find themselves in impossible situations; made pregnant by their father's or brothers. Until it happens to you, I think it is not something you can create policy for in a broad stroke. I actually met a 17 year old in the Wimpy a few weeks ago who had already had an abortion. Why? Part of the reason was probably because she was still at school. Another friend of mine became pregnant while studying a PH.D at Cambridge. The question is: is inconvenience an appropriate reason to have an abortion? But even if the answer is no, there will be plenty of people who choose to have abortions.
