Buy Local

Posted by PicasaHere are three samples of sardines from the local Pick'n Pay supermarket.
One is a product of Portugal, the second is local, and the third is a product of Canada. All are priced at about R5-R6. It may make sense to offer three different samples from different parts of the planet at the same supermarket (and I'm not sure if it does make sense), but in a Peak Oil era, the top product, and the bottom one, will disappear.
In any event, it is better to support local industries, even if they are more expensive, than to encourage the wasteful transportation of food over long distances. Long hauling food encourages the use of preservatives and makes the consumption of food increasingly unnatural/unhealthy.
In the future, we won't have the choice... Spanish Olives, Norwegian Salmon, New Zealand Mussels... Better get used to it, and start supporting local producers. We'll be needing them in the time to come.
