South Africa, as a minority dominant power surrounded by a majority population, also demonstrated that this system can't go on forever. One would hope a civilised people would be able to negotiate a peaceful settlement. I guess this simply means we're still not civlised, and to the winner (so the theory goes) go the spoils. I can't see there being a clear winner in the Middle East, which is why the failure to negotiate is something of a tragedy.
