Week 47, 4 - Breakthroughs (in miniature)

I cycled to Baengma today, and shaved about 20 minutes off the walk there and back. That freed up enough time for me to clean my apartment, including the kitchen and the floor. I got all the washing in the cupboard, and put in anther load. Thanks Cannondale.

The biggest breakthrough today, and indeed the biggest of one or two weeks, in terms of scope. Having noticed from the outside of the building that several windows' grills (metal shutter like windows) were open, I tried to locate my window. Once inside, I climbed onto the washing machine armed with a wire coat hanger and saw that it's not a wall behind my aircon unit, but a steel or aluminum grate. I tried to pull the shutter open. No luck. I had the sense to turn on the washroom light, and soon spotted the handle. I bent over, and turned into Captain Elastic of the Fabulous Four, to reach the handle. It make a sickly cracking sound, and light and fresh air flew inside the squat little room. Another crack and still another and the blinds were completely opened. The reason this was so important to do, is the washing machine and the aircon are housed in the same little compact room, and since the ventilation was almost zero, this room was turning into a little sauna. I also think it was making the cool air that the air con spilled into my side a lot less cool.

The upshot of all this is also that once I get home I can get the flow of cool air through my apartment much quicker. The temperature when I come in is typically 27 - 28.5 degrees Celcius. The windows are open now, and the sun down, so let's see what it is now.
26 degrees. A few more minutes and then the aircon can do the rest.

I'm boiling a potato on the stove. I had the same thing yesterday, with some spices and chutney. I also dug out some tins of tuna and have just had some tuna on toast. Today was a day that a backpacker (the type that stay in youth hostels or camp outdoors to save money) would have been proud of. I don't think I spent more than W10 000 today, including the coffees I bought downstairs to turn my engine.
The deal is that I can blog for as long as it takes to cook dinner. Then I need to relax and do other things.

Pete emailed me and I have to meet the guys tomorrow at Sungho Pool to pack the bikes away so we can leave first thing Saturday morning. Will do that tomorrow then, at 9pm, and then probably go and watch Sahara, and then pick up some groceries at C4.

Finally, the new textbooks arrived at school today. It's good to get back into the flow of things again.
The director was fairly friendly in the one or two brief exchanges we had. Not sure whether he has read the letter or not. My guess is he has and is ignoring it. Classes are going smoothly, expenses are down and I'm getting into a good rhythm. A doctor also emailed me and asked me to help her prepare for a trip to the States. She has some kind of medical conference coming up. I find when I do extra work, I become even better at doing all the other little things. When you do nothing, or very little, those few things you do, seem to become harder to do. That seems to be human nature.

It's my dad's birthday tomorrow. I must remember to call him with all that's going on this Friday.
