MEXICO CITY – Hurricane Carlos strengthened to a Category 2 storm and had a distinct small eye Tuesday as it moved farther out into the open Pacific.

Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida, said the storm's winds had increased to near 105 mph (165 kph). Some weakening was expected to occur over the next two days.

The storm was moving west at nearly 6 mph (9 kph), taking it farther out to sea.

Carlos was named a hurricane on Saturday but later weakened to a tropical storm. It regained hurricane strength Tuesday morning.

Also Tuesday, a tropical depression formed far off Mexico's Pacific coast, the center said. While it could become a tropical storm within 24 hours, it is expected to move out to sea.
