Air France wreckage found [VIDEO]

As French and Brazilian military aircraft searched the Atlantic for traces of the plane France called on the Pentagon to use its network of spy satellites to help locate the missing aircraft.

Its route took the aircraft through the Intertropical Convergence zone, a turbulent area along the equator known in France as the "pot au noir" or murky cauldron.

After meeting families of the missing at Charles de Gaulle airport, Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president said: "I told them the truth. The prospects of finding survivors are very small."

SHOOT: Wonder how this happened? And I wonder if climate change could cause more of these extreme weather disasters. Because what is apparent is this plane through into some huge clouds and got ripped apart very quickly.

Brazilian military aircraft searching for the Air France plane that disappeared over the Atlantic have sighted wreckage 400 miles off the South American country's northern coast.

The wreckage, which has still not been confirmed to be parts from Air France flight 447, includes metallic objects and plane seats, a spokesman for Brazil's air force said in a televised statement.

A total of 228 passengers and crew, including at least seven young children and one baby, were on board the Air France aircraft which vanished without a trace on a routine flight from Rio de Janeiro to Paris Charles de Gaulle.

It was the worst commercial air disaster for almost eight years and is believed to have claimed the lives of passengers from Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and China among other countries.

John Milne, headmaster of Clifton College, said it was "with deep regret" that he could confirm Alexander - a British passport holder - was a passenger on the doomed flight.
