There is a lot to this story. Books have been written. The All Black Joe Karam took him under his wing and subsequently wrote two books on David Bain. Bain has a large group of supporters arguing that he is innocent.
While the evidence strongly supports that 22-year old David Bain (now 37) killed his family in their beds with his own hunting rifle, Bain contends that his father killed the family, then committed suicide (while David was out on his newspaper round). David returned to find a computer message on the screen: "SORRY, YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE THAT DESERVED TO STAY."
As in the OJ Simpson murder, bloody socks and numerous other details have been exhaustively discussed. There is a real possibility that Bain could be acquitted, not because he is innocent, or even because reasonable doubt exists, but because the police possibly tampered with evidence, and the amount of detail provided by the defence may be so voluminous and destracting that the jury might feel a sense of 'uncertainty' about the whole case. Thus uncertainty = doubt.
I have examined the case in quite exhaustive detail and it seems very probable that David did commit the murders. An image of Robin Bain, David's father, clearly shows the body has been moved from the position where blood leaked onto the carpet. Either David did this or the police. What would the police have to gain by doing so? David had far more to gain - his innocence, his freedom. There were also no fingerprints of the father on the gun. There is plenty more drama: David's hysterical fit, the 111 emergency call David made quite some time (20 minutes) after returning from his paper run and the house in Every Road burnt down a month after the murders by the Bain Family Trust.
While some of the facts may be disputed, what cannot be disputed is that either David or his father are the killers. The killer knew exactly where each family member was in the incredible cluttered and unpleasant smelling home. What I found interesting was the sort of people the Bain's were, and the sort of living conditions that caused someone - probably David - to kill their own family.
The video below shows how scarily disordered the entire house was. It must have been like living in a garbage dump.
What's also interesting is that David essentially didn't have a job. His sister was rumored to have gone into prostitution. There was talk of Robin, a missionary (he was praying in the lounge as was his habit when he was shot) having an incestuous relationship with Laniet. The mother was said to be mentally unstable. And of course there was gun ownership.
Let's look at that again:
1) Unemployment
2) Depression
3) Incest
4) Religion
5) Gun Ownership
6) Living in squalor
7) Joe Karam's valiant effort to 'save' David was really about milking an opportunity to get his story and sell it, the same thing happened to MONSTER (aka Aileen Wuornos]
8) If David is the killer and he almost certainly is, either he suffers from a split personality or is an incredibly malicious and devious human being, capable of lying to himself (which is somehow doubtful) but is obviously capable of attempting to deceive the world about a horrible crime, and expecting to get away with it - and declared 'innocent'.
But above all there seems to be both a mental illness [madness] and lack of honesty [truth] at the heart of this malaise:
It reveals that when giving his evidence, David Bain was asked why he suddenly remembered he had been into the bedrooms of his siblings and seen they had been shot.
Mr Bain said his memory returned after he spoke to a doctor, six months after the killings.
SHOOT: Once it was proved that there was evidence that David had entered each of the rooms, he remembered that he had entered each of the rooms.
But in his cross examination, he was asked if this coincided with the depositions hearing, during which the police revealed they could link Mr Bain to the bedrooms of his siblings through the blood found on his clothes.
Mr Bain accepted his memory of seeing all of his family dead and even touching them did return six months after the killings, but did not know if that related to the depositions evidence.
He said he could not recall the exact time during his sessions with the doctor that his memory returned.
The court was told that the depositions hearing was the day before Mr Bain first saw the doctor.
David Bain also appears to have forgotten that he committed the murders at all.In my opinion, blaming someone else as a means to exonerate ourselves is a common distortion used the world over. By ordinary people. I've experienced it. We excuse smoking by saying drinking is worse. We accuse someone else of cheating on us but won't admit we've done it ourselves. We'll never accept or admit liability or accountability.
Whilst investigating the David Bain case I came up with extensive information about a rotten police force in Dunedin. The entire upper-echelons accused on regularly indulging in bestiality and recruiting mothers and daughters for sex shows in upmarket hotels.
All this goes to show is that much of society around the world is rotten to its core. It doesn't take a pandemic virus to prove this, but it may take a pandemic virus to cure our species of its spiritual sickness.
