SHOOT: It should concern everyone that this woman in her 30's died on April 30, but the cause of death is communicated almost 2 weeks later, and is described grudgingly as 'swine flu complications'. In addition, other details have been muddied, including her age. 30-something is not 'elderly'.
OTTAWA (AFP) — A woman in her 30s from a remote area of western Alberta province has become the first person to die from possible swine flu complications in Canada, health authorities said Friday.
"We have our first fatality in Alberta that is associated with the H1N1 flu," Andre Corriveau, Alberta's chief medical officer told a press conference.
Officials initially said the woman was elderly but later said she was in her 30s.
She died on April 28.
Testing on the deceased shortly after another family member contracted the virus found she had "a mild form of the H1N1 virus." The elderly relative is recovering at home, said officials.
Including the Alberta death, health officials have identified nine new cases in the province, and two in Prince Edward Island, bringing the national total to 224 cases.
