Eskom seeks SIGNICANT tariff increase. That's odd, they seem to be unaware that the whole world is facing a Recession!

NVDL: Once these tariffs take effect, and once the recession bites, expect a lot of people to raise their fists in anger. I have said before that the internet in this country may not be viable for the simple reason that we may not have electricity. We may not have electricity not only because it's hard to meet demand, but because those who demand it won't be able to pay for it. Of course most of us think of electricity the same way we think about air - we simple EXPECT it to be there. Not gonna happen.

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South Africa's state-owned utility Eskom will seek a significant increase from the power regulator when it applies for a tariff increase in a few weeks time, Eskom said on Tuesday.

"What we have said is there is a need for a significant increase in electricity tariffs," Eskom spokesman Fani Zulu told Reuters in an interview.

Eskom wants a tariff increase to help fund its power expansion programme over the next five years. The utility said it had delayed the submission to take into account the impact the financial crisis would have on consumers, and its own ability to borrow given the state of the global markets.
