The meltdown meltdown — the rapid disintegration of the planet's climate system that threatens to challenge the very foundations of our civilization. We're at 35ppm above the critical threshold already, with annual increases of 2ppm. Probably, whatever climate calamity is waiting for us is already on its way. I guess we can start arguing and debating how bad it will be (whilst, of course, once again doing little or nothing about it).
Of course, right now there are still many people who claim that Climate Change is a hoax. Intelligent people can occasionally be very very stupid. The risks of being 'wrong' on climate change were never worth it. It was always worth averting the risk of being right. Of course, it was always in the very limited self interests of some to argue that Climate Change wasn't happening.

Do you think that sounds melodramatic? Let me give it to you from the abstract of a scientific paper written earlier this year by one of the people who now work for Mr. Obama, NASA scientist James Hansen. "If humanity wishes to preserve a planet similar to that on which civilization developed and to which life on Earth is adapted, paleo-climate evidence and ongoing climate change suggest that CO2 [in the atmosphere] will need to be reduced from its current 385 ppm [parts per million] to at most 350 ppm." In other words, if we keep increasing carbon any longer, the earth itself will make our efforts moot. Obama also faces the meltdown meltdown — the rapid disintegration of the planet's climate system that threatens to challenge the very foundations of our civilization. |
