Ike weakens to Cat 1 [LATEST SATELLITE IMAGE]

Ike is currently 340km southeast of Havana. As is apparent from the satellite image, Ike remains a very large system. Weakening was expected, though with any luck Ike may weaken further. Ike's eye is about to move off the south coast of Cuba, as soon as that happens, Ike will get stronger as he tracks gradually north and west into the Gulf. Once in the toasty warm waters of the Gulf rapid strengthening is forecast. Here's the latest track.

I think we can expect a similar strengthening pattern that we saw with Gustav. Ike will probably rev back up to Cat 3 and then lose a little steam just before making landfall. Let's hope so.
