CIVICUS: Today, October 17, the Global Call to Action against Poverty (GCAP) and the United Nations Millennium Campaign jointly continue to mobilise people, communities, civil society organisations, political groups and individuals around the world, urging millions more to join this growing global movement against poverty and inequality.
People will demand an increase in the quantity and quality of aid without conditionality, debt cancellation for least developed countries, fair trade and equality for all, especially the marginalised in all spheres.
These Stand Up events all over the world will also demand the leaders of 189 countries who signed up to the Millennium Development Goals in the year 2000, to fulfil and exceed these targets and achieve the global plan to halve extreme poverty by 2015. From workers to students, women’s groups to community groups, people are urged to call on political leaders to deliver more and better aid to the poorest nations, implement fairer trade conditions, cancel debt, ensure gender equality as well as greater transparency and accountability from their governments.
They will stand up and challenge the world in over 100 countries. Events will range from major rallies, human chains, banners, street rallies, delegations to political leaders, women’s tribunals, cultural shows and concerts to gatherings in school assemblies, town halls and refugee camps. e-CIVICUS subscribers are asked to register for the Guinness challenge in the 24-hour period from 9pm GMT on October 16 to 9pm GMT on October 17th to participate in the global campaign against poverty.
