Bloem Residents Furious At Proposed Landfill Project

Naval Hill identified to provide landfill for Kimberley’s Big Hole

The Mangaung Municipality has published tenders in a local newspaper (Die Volksblad) asking private enterprises to get involved in the Kimberley Hole Refill Project. Construction and long distance trucking companies have been identified as candidates who may be awarded the multi-million rand KHRP contract.

The ‘Friends of Naval Hill’ and a local residents association have declared that they will oppose the civil project, and co-ordinate a protest in the city streets, despite the Project's endorsement and approval at local government level.

Bloemfontein City major is quoted in the local paper as saying: "Naval Hill is a blight on the city, and is prime land. We have voted on the issue and it was unanimous. We would like landscape the hill into a more practical urban development [in order] to use this valuable property for parks, low cost townhouse developments and a new office complex.”

The tender process is expected to be completed by the end of October 2007.
