Despite the "well-being" trend that is sweeping the nation, Koreans are still consuming sodium amounts that are considered higher than the international standard, according to the Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA).식품의약청
The KFDA said Koreans consume on average 4,900 milligrams of sodium every day. The World Health Organization세계보건기구 recommends 2,000 milligrams.
The KFDA said Korean foods like kimchi and soybean paste된장 contain high amounts of sodium. One serving of kimchi accounts for 30 percent of the daily recommended allowance of sodium.
The report also said a serving of "kalguksu" contains 2,900 milligrams of sodium, which already surpasses the recommended allowance. One serving of "ramyeon" or "udong" has 2,100 milligrams.
Korean dishes like "naengmyeon" and kimchi stew also have high amounts of sodium.
Health experts say a high-sodium diet can result in kidney problems and hypertension, or high blood pressure.
Kang Hye-kyung, of the KFDA, said Koreans should change their diets before the onset of health-related consequences.
"Instead of salt-based foods and spices, Koreans should try to eat more black pepper, garlic, ginger and vinegar," she said.
